National Ice Cream Day

Which is the sweetest day in the year? The third Sunday of the month July is the sweetest day of the year because it is the National Ice Cream Day and the Month July is National Ice Cream Month.

In 1984, the then U S President Ronald Reagan declared July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day.

Ice cream is one of the most delicious and favorite desserts of all, especially kids and teens around the world. There are many fascinating myths about the history of ice cream and much of them are unproven folklore.

It is believed that the Ice cream is originated in China around 2000 BC. In another popular story, the Italian traveler Marco Polo (1254-1324) saw ice creams being made during his trip to China, and on his return, he introduced it to Italy and the Italian chefs taken this magical dish to France in 1533. There is no historical evidence to support any of these stories.

The history of ice cream is directly linked with the development of refrigeration procedure and can thus be traced in different stages as given below: -

  • Cooling food and drink by mixing it with snow or ice.
  • The discovery that dissolving salts in water which produces cooling;
  • Improvements in process by mixing salts and snow or ice cools even further which is in mid to late 17th century. The inclusion of cream in the water ices also evolved around this time.
  • The invention of the ice cream maker in mid 19th century.
  • The development of mechanical refrigeration in the later 19th and early 20th centuries led to the development of the modern ice cream industry

Early production methods were placing the ingredients in a metal container, surrounded by a freezing mixture of ice and coarse salt, and mixing them until smooth.

In modern plants the basic ingredients are poured into a tank, mixed and pasteurized. The mixture is then further cooled, piped to a freezing tank, and beaten until smooth and add nuts or fruits. Also add different flavors and permitted colours and then packed into the containers that are stored in a refrigerated room until hard.

In USA 90% of the nation's population recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food. Besides tasting good it contains vitamins A, riboflavin (B2) and B12, calcium and its protein level is almost similar to milk.

In 1984, President Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."
