Food for Infants

Best Food

Mother’s milk is the best food for infants. It is warm, clean, and free of germs. It contains all required nutrients for babies up to 6 months and it boost resistance to infection. Breast milk also contains a number of substances – vitamins, immunogenic bodies, enzymes-that are absent/ destroyed or reduced in cows milk through sterilization. Mother’s milk is more digestible than cow’s milk.

Recommended Feedings

First 2-3 months --7 feedings at 3 hours interval with 6 hrs. night break.
3-5 months ---6 feedings at 3½ hours interval with 6 hrs. night break.
5months-1 year --5 feedings with 4 hrs. intervals and 8hrs night
break.

From 2nd month onwards introduce fruit juice with little sugar added. Vegetable juice is also recommended. (Tomato, apple, lemons carrot, beetroot). The best time for giving juices is in between feedings, beginning with ½ a tea spoon and gradually increasing to 3-4 table spoon full. Vitamins A & D are given with fish liver oil commencing at the age of 2 ½ months in doses prescribed by a doctor.

After 5-5 ½ months, breast milk is not enough for the baby and he should be started on supplementary solids. The most common solid food and stages of starting them in case of artificial feeding are ;-

5% cereal …………………………5 months
10% cereal …………5½ to 6 months
Potato starch, fruit juice, pudding, Sieved vegetables,Toast, crackers, yolk of egg ………….6 months.
Meat broth …………7 months.
Forced meat 8 ½ --9 months.

The solids should be introduced very cautiously, beginning with
3-4 tea spoonfuls and gradually increasing the quantity.
